September SUPER Volunteer of the Month: Roslyn Reeps

Roslyn was nominated by Shelly Campbell and Dani Graham and voted on by the PTSA Board of Directors. Here is what Shelly and Dani had to say about Roslyn:

Shelly – “I am nominating Roslyn Reeps for volunteer of the month! She deserves it so much for all the ways she has jumped in to help our school and community. She came to our Spring PTSA Meet & Greet to find out how she could get more involved and she found the perfect fit for her as our Advocacy Chair. Roslyn has a background having worked on various legislative affairs in her past jobs and was excited to find ways to help our school. She is planning to attend school board meetings when needed and will be attending Legislative Assembly in October to represent Stillwater Elementary. She has a passion for helping make our school a better Green School and quickly started our awesome GREEN TEAM. They went to work to help implement more recycling in our cafeteria and around the school. Roslyn worked with the kindergarten team to plant our schools gardens. They use the garden for kids to learn about gardening processes and grow delicious veggies. We appreciate all the BIG ways she is impacting our school! THANK YOU Roslyn!!”

Dani – “Roslyn is a great focused ball of energy. She’s actively engaged in making SWE greener as a founding member of the new Green Team. She’s been instrumental in the garden, often weeding, harvesting, and bringing produce to the kitchen staff to be used in the cafeteria. (She’s also very active helping at the Hopelink garden and her own home garden!) She developed a well organized curriculum that we tested out during the 2017-2018 year for the kindergarten classes to get hands on experience growing and enjoying vegetables. We had rave reviews! She leads our monthly Green Team meetings. She has been working tirelessly seeking out grants throughout the summer to help fund the different recycling and garden projects that the team voted on last June. SWE is so lucky to have her and her background skillsets to help bring this program to life!”

Roslyn and her husband, Steve have two daughters, Norah (6) and Rebecca (3). The Reeps are new to Washington, they moved here from Connecticut and have enjoyed getting to experience all the Pacific Northwest has to offer. This is Roslyn’s second year being part of the Stillwater community and when asked what her favorite volunteer activity at Stillwater has been so far she said it was working with the kindergarteners in the garden last year. “It was great to see how excited the kids got to be outside and be part of growing their own veggies.”

When Roslyn is not volunteering, she likes to spend her time…can you guess it? Gardening! ? She also enjoys being with her family and going on hikes. Since she has such a green thumb, we asked her what her favorite plant/flower is and she said it was too hard to pick, “they are like children!” But she did really enjoy planting the peas and carrots with the kindergartners last year. “The pea seeds were easy for little fingers to plant and the kids were amazed at how big the plants were and how sweet the peas were right off the plant. Even though the carrot seeds were a lot harder to plant, pulling carrots was like unlocking a mystery each time.”

And finally, we asked Roslyn the why, why does she volunteer? “I volunteer to be a part of my daughter’s education and school community. I also volunteer to help make a healthier and more environmentally sustainable Stillwater. (The Green Team is always looking for volunteers who would like to join us in this mission.)” Hint, hint for anyone that wants to be more green!!

Thank you Roslyn for your dedication to Stillwater and congrats on your nomination!!!
