There’s still time to enter the Reflections arts competition
Your student can submit one piece of artwork for each category of their choosing: Literature, Music Composition, Film/Video, Dance Choreography, Visual Arts (2D/3D) or photography. For official rules, please refer to WSPTA Reflections page https://www.wastatepta.org/events-programs/reflections/.
Entries will be critiqued against others in the same art category and grade division. Up to half of the total score comes from the interpretation of the theme: WITHIN REACH. The other half is based on creative, artistic and technical merit.
Important Reflection’s Dates:
October 20: Early Bird submissions due. All early bird submissions will be entered in a Prize Drawing to win a Kindle!
October 27: Final Submissions due

Please turn in you artwork to the Stillwater front office. There will be a box labeled Reflections.
Literature
Fiction or non-fiction. Poetry, prose, drama, reflective essay, narrative and short story.2,000 words or less, phonetic spelling ok. Handwritten or typed on 8.5 x 11 in paper, one sided, pages numbered, no binding. Illustrations ok, but judging is on literary content. No mounting, binding or staples. No collection of works. Dictation by preschool, Kindergarten or 1st graders to parents is ok.
Dance Choreography
Original choreography dance composition: ballet, contemporary, ethnic & folk, freestyle, hip hop, jazz, street dance, and tap. 5 minutes or less, 1 GB file size max. Choreographer is not required to be a performer. Group performances of choreographer’s work is ok, but choreographer gets credit. Accepted file formats: AVI, MOV, MP4, WMV, FLV. Save as a file and NOT a movie.
Music Composition
Original composition with or without words: a cappella, blues, choral, country, electronic, hip hop, jazz, world, pop, rock, R&B, religious, symphonic, etc. All genres accepted! 5 minutes or less, 1GB file size max. Composer is not required to be the performer. Music notation is not required. Accepted file formats: MP3, WMA, WAV, ACC (M4A), and FLAC. Save as a file and NOT a movie.
Visual Arts
Accepted forms of 2D Visual Arts include: collages, photographic collages (multiple photos cut/pasted), computer-generated image, drawing, painting and printmaking. Entries may be created on paper, canvas board, cardboard, hot or cold pressboard, or cut canvas. Art MAY NOT exceed 24 x 30 inches nor exceed 1/2 inch in thickness including matting. Entries should be mounted on foam core, or other sturdy material. NO wood, metal, plastic, glass, or framed canvas. No loose pieces extending off surface of work.
Accepted forms of 3D Visual Arts include:
architecture carpentry, ceramics, dioramas, fiber work, jewelry, kites, metal etching/punch work, mobiles, wind chimes, and sculpture. MUST be mounted on foam core or sturdy cardboard/mat and be able to be moved for displaying. No frames or loose material. Submit 3 photos of entry from different angles with finished piece.
Film/Video
Animation, narrative, documentary, experimental and multimedia. 5 minutes or less, 1 GB file size max. Student must be screenwriter, director and camera person, but not required to appear in film. Use of tripod OK if student wants to appear in film, but student must still operate camera for filming. Accepted file formats: AVI, MOV, WMV, FLV, MP4
Photography
Color or black/white. Accepted forms: a single print/digital image. Digital editing techniques such as multiple exposure, negative sandwiches and photogram accepted. No added graphics or lettering over image. Print MAY NOT be smaller than 3 x 5 in and no larger than 8 x 10 in. Mount on mat or poster board no larger than 11 x 14 in. Digital image dimension must be at least 640 x 960 pixels and 300 dpi resolution. No albums or frames.
JUDGING
Entries will be critiqued against others in the same art category and grade division.
Grade divisions are:
Primary: Preschool – Grade 2 Intermediate: Grades 3 – 5
Special Artist: option for ADA qualifying students. This is a non-graded division that allows for accommodations.
- Up to half of the total score comes from the interpretation of the theme.
The other half is based on creative, artistic and technical merit.
- All entries will be displayed, and all artists will be recognized and celebrated at our
Awards Gala on 11/17.
- Finalists will advance to the Riverview School District Reflections competition.
- Entries must be the original work of an individual student created specifically for this year’s competition. No group entries.
- Each entry must be submitted with a completed Student Entry Form including a parent’s signature.
Students submitting in more than one art category must have a separate entry form for each entry.
